The character of the nurse is as important as the knowledge she possesses~ Carolyn Jarvis

Professional Goals

Even before entering USF’s College of Nursing, I planned on a career in Pediatric nursing. My passion for working with children was reaffirmed during my fourth semester when we did our Pediatric/OB clinical hours at All Chidlren’s Hospital and Bayfront’s Babyplace. I was able to interact with newborns and children up to the age of 17 years. I thoroughly enjoyed working on the pediatric oncology unit at ACH, and was inspired by the nursing staff’s positivity and compassion for their patients. I also did my preceptorship hours in the NICU at ACH, and am considering working in that unit or one similar in the future. After passing the NCLEX this summer, I plan on starting in a pediatric or neonatal RN residency program. In the fall of 2015, I hope to begin USF’s Masters program in Nursing with a concentration in Pediatrics. I will end the Masters program in the summer of 2017 and apply to jobs as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner that fall. Once I begin work as a PNP, I hope to settle down in Tampa for the next five years or so, depending on circumstances, or until I feel called to another area in Florida or out of state.

Short term (1-2 years):
  • My goal after passing the NCLEX this summer is to be hired at a hospital specializing in pediatrics in the Tampa Bay area and begin in a Pediatric/Neonatal Nurse Residency Program by the fall of this year. I am looking at St. Joseph’s Nurse Internship Program which begins in September. There are other hospitals I will be applying to as well as a RN I.
  • After my first year as a nurse, I hope to make my permanent position in a Pediatric or Neonatal ICU or oncology unit.
  • I will apply to USF’s Masters of Nursing Program with a focus in Pediatrics in the Spring (February) of 2015 for that fall’s cohort. I will be enrolled full time.
  • I plan on working part time or PRN as a RN II during USF’s Master’s Program.

Long Term (3-5 years):
  • My goal is to graduate from USF’s Masters of Nursing Program in the summer of 2017 and pass the exam to become a PNP (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner).
  • I would like to be working as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in my then current place of work in the fall of 2017 ideally.
